Once earning $150,000 annually, software engineer Shawn K is now working as a delivery driver to make ends meet. Despite having 20 years of experience and a degree in computer science, the rapid growth of artificial intelligence has pushed him out of the tech sector.
Shawn had previously recovered from unemployment during the pandemic and the 2008 financial crisis. But this time, he says, things are different. He’s applied to over 800 jobs, got just 10 interviews, and was often evaluated by AI systems instead of humans. “I feel invisible. I’m being filtered out without ever speaking to anyone,” he says.
Previously working in metaverse technologies, Shawn now lives in a camper van in New York, delivering food through DoorDash and selling household items on eBay to survive.
According to Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, by the end of 2025, 90% of code will be written by artificial intelligence. Over 150,000 tech professionals lost their jobs in 2024 alone, and that number surpassed 50,000 in just the first quarter of 2025.
