Indonesia has become the first country in Southeast Asia to ban children under 16 from accessing major social media platforms, effective March 28. The new regulation prohibits young users from creating accounts on platforms including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live, and Roblox. The government said the ban aims to protect children from cyberattacks, online scams, and social media addiction. Operators that fail to comply with the rules will face administrative sanctions, including fines and account access blocks. Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, stated that X has committed to identifying and deactivating accounts of underage users, while Roblox has informed the government of plans to switch users under 13 to offline mode.
